Magazine Politics

My last post about the race car on the cover (that probably belonged to a friend of the editor) got me thinking. There is so much that goes on behind magazine doors that no one knows about. I’ve been in this industry for nearly 10 years. I’ve seen it all firsthand.

We used to have an awesome relationship with several magazines and I’d like to think we still do with some. When you come into our showroom, you’ll see articles that we were featured in all over the walls. See!

Now, I can honestly say that 100 % of tech articles we did for the magazine were either for vehicles that belonged to an editor at the magazine or a friend of the editor. I recall a specific tech article that we did for a Chevy Tahoe that included installing a lift kit (which was given to the magazine for free for the feature), wheels, tires, the whole package. Well, the editor of the magazine needed his boat gel coated. It just so happens that was the specialty of the owner of the Tahoe. Free Tahoe makeover for a free boat makeover. Another friend of an editor got his entire garage made over with free products from advertisers so it became their own little mechanics garage. Now they can all take their own projects over their to work on them with all the free tools they got and take potential tech articles away from real shops. It was crazy to me how they were taking advantage of their advertisers.

After years of working with the magazines, we called it quits. Not only were these guys using us to get their cars and trucks tricked out for free on their advertisers dime but they were asking us to install terrible products. They weren’t interested in showing readers awesome products that they will love, they were interested in money. We were asked several times to install products that we knew were crap and they knew they were crap, but the manufacturer was an advertiser so they had to showcase the product somehow.  There are just so many thing wrong with that. They are misleading readers. Telling them to use products that they know are sub par, just to make money.

(Disclaimer: Not all editors we have worked with do this kind of shady business. There are many wonderful dudes out there that actually care what they put into the magazines you read!)

Cover worthy…or not?

Over a year ago, we approached the editorial staff at World of Rods magazine about featuring a vehicle we built in their magazine. Here is a picture of the vehicle:

Now I won’t name names because I’m sure someone will get their panties in a wad over it but, one editor actually told us they were not interested in featuring this vehicle in their magazine because “Race cars tank the magazine.” My jaw dropped when I heard that.

Really? People won’t buy that issue if they see this car on the cover?

How many of you would be interested in reading about the rich history of this vehicle? Or seeing more pictures of this car? The suspension, the interior, the tube work, the motor!   Are you freaking kidding me?!?!

So, guess what I saw a few months later? A race car on the cover. I wonder how their sales were that month. I wish I had a copy of the cover to post but I think I threw it away because it wasn’t very exciting. Now my guess is that the owner of said race car was a friend of an editor at the magazine and that’s how his less that perfect race car ended up on the cover of a magazine that doesn’t like to featured race cars.

Stay tuned for our own in depth look at the history behind this car.

A bike of a different color…

Everyone loves blue pearl. It seems like you see it everywhere. It’s a beautiful color but it’s been done again and again. So we changed it up. Gave it a new life!

This bike was cool but now it’s even more badass with our custom bags and fender.

Can’t wait to see this bad boy on the street!

Too pretty to get dirty

After all the man hours painting this car and polishing it to a high sheen, it’s a shame to even get a spec of dirt on it. But that’s what it was built for and that’s where it belongs…in the dirt!

This is an Imzz Industries custom built sandcar. Complete with Twin turbo 700HP, full custom paint, and a custom windshield. Since that wasn’t enough to make this the coolest rig in the desert, we added satellite radio, an iPod doc and Racer X carbon fiber headsets.

A diamond in the rough

I think it’s fair to say that this is one of the sickest bikes ever built, if not THE sickest bike EVER built. It would stand out in a sea of bikes no question.

Scroll down to see this bike in action ;-)
